What Makes a House Feel Like Home? It’s Probably Not What You Think.
What makes a house feel like home? It's a question I've been asking myself a lot lately.
After leaving the home where we raised our family, I've realized that what makes a house feel like home has very little to do with square footage, finishes, or furniture. Those things certainly add beauty and personality, and as someone designing a custom home from the ground up, I appreciate every thoughtful detail. But this season has reminded me that the homes we carry with us aren't remembered for the countertops or the paint colors.
They're remembered for the lives that unfolded inside them.
As we build Five Trails, I'm more convinced than ever that creating a home isn't just about construction. It's about creating a place where life happens well.
What Makes a House Feel Like Home? It's the People.
When we walked out of our home for the last time, I didn't find myself thinking about the hardwood floors or the kitchen island. I certainly didn't worry about the light fixtures (well…there was that one bad call I made in the dining room, but….)
I thought about birthday candles. Christmas mornings. Homework spread across the kitchen table. Teenagers racing down the hallway because they were running late. Our dogs waiting by the back door. Prepping our favorite holiday foods and Easter egg hunts. Prepping for every imaginable sporting event or rock concert. (Yes, our family spent many a weekend watching our oldest perform in bars with the local teen rock band. It was literally the coolest!) Harley, Jesse, and Dempsey, our family dogs who lived there with us during these 20 years. Family dinners that stretched long after the plates had been cleared.
Those are the things that made our house feel like home and the walls simply had the privilege of witnessing them. That realization has changed the way I'm approaching every decision we're making at Five Trails.
Instead of asking, “Will this look beautiful?” I'm asking a different question:
Will this help us live beautifully? and What will our beautiful life look like in this next stage?
Designing a House to Feel Like Home
I love timeless design.
I love natural stone, warm walnut cabinetry, black windows framing the trees, and a front porch that quietly welcomes people before they ever ring the doorbell.
I also love our stuff. The things we've collected and inherited over our nearly 35 years together: the nightstands bought at a garage sale in Tampa for $10, the treasured coffee table build by my brother Tom, the antique pie safe from my mother-in-law Mary, a decades-old collection of pitchers in every shape and size, even a cool piece of artwork that came from of all places, Service Merchandise, when we were dating. I have already imagined places for these things in our new home.
None of that has changed. But the purpose behind our choices has become much clearer.
We're designing a dining room because I hope it becomes the place where our kids bring future spouses, where grandchildren may someday spill juice on the table, and where Thanksgiving gets louder every year. (This is a given with our Thanksgiving crowd!)
We're planning a warm front entrance because I want people to feel welcome before they ever step inside.
We're creating gathering spaces because conversations deserve room to unfold naturally. Every design decision is really a decision about how we want to live. The finishes simply support that vision.
The Small Things That Make a House Feel Like Home
When I think back on the homes I've loved most, the memories aren't grand. They're wonderfully ordinary. Fresh coffee brewing before anyone else wakes up. Shoes kicked off by the door. A favorite blanket that somehow always ends up on the same chair. Music playing, always. The sound of laughter drifting from another room. Fresh flowers picked from the yard. A dog sleeping in a patch of afternoon sunlight.
None of those moments can be purchased. None of them show up in a floor plan. Yet together, they are exactly what makes a house feel like home.
Why This Build Feels Different
Before we broke ground, I thought this journey would mostly be about creating our forever home. This season has taught me something much bigger. Five Trails isn't simply about building a beautiful house. It's about creating a place where our family can continue becoming who we're meant to be.
The house will hold birthdays and anniversaries we haven't celebrated yet. Conversations we haven't had. Losses we can't yet imagine. Celebrations we haven't dreamed of.
Quiet mornings. Busy holidays. Unexpected detours. Ordinary Tuesdays.
That's what we're really building. Not a perfect house. A home that makes space for an imperfect, beautiful life. And maybe that's what makes any house feel like home.
Not perfection, presence. Not expensive finishes, meaningful moments. Not the walls themselves, but the people they quietly shelter.

Ask yourself one simple question: How do I want people to feel here?
That answer may guide your choices more clearly than any trend ever could. Whether your budget is modest or unlimited, homes become memorable because of the life they invite, not the money invested in them. Years from now, no one will remember whether your hardware was polished nickel or brass. They'll remember how they felt sitting around your table. And that's a legacy worth designing for.

This week reminded me that houses don't become homes all at once. They become home one ordinary moment at a time.
One family dinner. One late-night conversation. One child running through the front door. One friend who stayed longer than they planned.
The blueprint gives a house its shape. The people inside it give it its soul.
