5 Things to Buy During a Home Build

One of the smartest lessons we’ve learned so far is that not every purchase needs to happen the week you move in. Some of the best things to buy during a home build are items you can purchase gradually while construction is still underway.

Spreading purchases out helps protect your budget, reduces move-in chaos, and gives you time to wait for better prices instead of panic-buying under fluorescent store lighting while eating drive-thru fries.

This is Part 1 of our series on things to buy during a home build—starting with five categories we think make sense to shop for and buy early. Full disclosure – we're still in the shopping phase so I'll be sharing the top items from my wish lists in key areas.

Area rugs are one of the things to buy before you build.
Neutral, washable area rugs we're loving.

1. Rugs

Rugs are one of the easiest items to buy ahead of time, especially if you already know room sizes and style direction. Large rugs often go on sale seasonally, and the best patterns or sizes can disappear fast. Buying early also gives you time to compare materials, read reviews, and avoid settling later.

What we’re looking at: neutral area rugs for the primary, great room, kids' rooms, office and dining room, washable rugs, hallway runners
Current wish list obsession: This washable, vintage-inspired neutral area rug.

Barstools are one of the things to buy before you build.
I'm all about texture in the barstools we'll choose.

2. Bar Stools

There's no doubt the kitchen island will become the center of life immediately. Coffee, work, snacks, big and small conversations, mail piles—it all lands there. That means stools matter more than people expect. Buying early gives you time to confirm height, comfort, and style before move-in week. We're looking specifically for options that add texture to our space.

What to check first: counter height vs. bar height
Current wish list obsession: These barstools that bring great texture.

Outdoor furniture is one of the things to buy before you build.

3. Outdoor Furniture

Outdoor furniture is one of those categories that sells out exactly when everyone wants it. If your build timeline points toward spring or summer move-in, planning ahead matters more than ours, which is looking more like winter delivery. (Let's hope!) Even buying one anchor piece early can help spread out future costs.

What we’re considering: outdoor dining set, lounge chairs, sectional seating
Current wish list obsession (it's a SPLURGE! Is it worth it?): This amazing outdoor family room set.

Table lamps are one of the things to buy before you build.
Table Lamps we are loving right now.

4. Lamps

Overhead lights make a room functional and their necessary, but lamps make it feel like home. This is an easy category to buy slowly over time because lamps store well and often go on sale. It also helps you layer lighting from day one instead of living in operating-room brightness.

What we’re looking at: bedside lamps, floor lamps, entry lamps
Current wish list obsession: This super on-trend travertine table lamp.

Entry benches are one of the things to buy before you build.
Excited to use one of these entry benches in our mudroom entry.

5. Entry Bench

An entry bench is one of those practical purchases people remember only after shoes begin breeding near the door. A bench adds seating, storage, and structure to the daily drop zone. If your future home includes a mudroom or entry hall, this is worth planning early.

What we’re considering: bench with baskets, lift-top storage bench, wood bench
Current wish list obsession: This cute little guy with room for storage underneath for our mudroom.

Why We’re Buying Slowly

We’re trying to make intentional purchases instead of stacking every cost into one expensive month. Focusing on a few things to buy during a home build at a time gives us breathing room later—and fewer rushed decisions. Because move-in week should involve excitement, not 47 browser tabs and mild panic.

Coming in Part 2

Next up: five more smart purchases to make before move-in, including mirrors, laundry storage, guest room basics, closet organizers, and office essentials.

Final Thought

Building a home is already a long game. Shopping for it should be too. Buy thoughtfully, buy gradually, and let time do some of the financial heavy lifting.
